Does it have to be only one?
I am an avid reader and no matter how busy, I make sure that I get to sit down and read at least 10-15 minutes every day. I am not a romantic so I can’t recommend any of these genre but I love biographies, historical fiction, fantasy and crime thrillers.
Reading is my escape. I love getting to meet so many characters and traveling into so many worlds and living a thousand lives
That being said, I think it’s time for me to just give you a list of my most loved books out there. The ones that are still in my heart after years of having read them, the ones that I will gladly re read a thousand times without getting bored.
Did I say I am not a romantic? Well, one of my top reads is actually an incredible love story that was turned into a movie and broke boundaries when the first black woman to be nominated and win an Oscar in 1940 for best supporting actress in Gone With the Wind. She sat at a segregated table but she did make history.
- Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell – a timeless classic. A tale of love, survival, and resilience. And no matter how some just decided on banning this book, I stand by my choice. There is a reason behind it being one of the most sold books of all times. As you turn the pages you are taken to a bygone era of opulent plantations, romance, and the struggle for survival in a world torn apart by conflict. The love between Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler is one that will live forever in my heart. I admire her determination and ambition, her strong will and stubbornness. She taught me how to stand on my own two feet even when it seems like there is no tomorrow. She taught me to love unconditionally, to always look ahead and never lose hope. “After all, tomorrow is another day”
- Another book I will never forget is A LITTLE LIFE by Hanya Yanagihara – this book broke me into a million pieces. I will never be the same after reading it but it is THE book I always recommend. The story followsΒ four college classmatesβbroke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambitionβas they move to New York in search of fame and fortune. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their centre of gravity. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he’ll not only be unable to overcome – but that will define his life forever.
- Another story I will forever treasure is SWORD OF KEIGEN by M L Wang – “Better to die sharp in war than rust through a time of peace”.
A mother struggling to repress her violent past. A son struggling to grasp his violent future. A father blind to the danger that threatens them all. High on a mountainside at the edge of the Kaigenese Empire live the most powerful warriors in the world, superhumans capable of raising the sea and wielding blades of ice. For hundreds of years, the fighters of the Kusanagi Peninsula have held the Empireβs enemies at bay, earning their frozen spit of land the name βThe Sword of Kaigen. βBorn into Kusanagiβs legendary Matsuda family, fourteen-year-old Mamoru has always known his purpose: to master his familyβs fighting techniques and defend his homeland. But when an outsider arrives and pulls back the curtain on Kaigenβs alleged age of peace, Mamoru realizes that he might not have much time to become the fighter he was bred to be. Worse, the empire he was bred to defend may stand on a foundation of lies.Misaki told herself that she left the passions of her youth behind when she married into the Matsuda house. Determined to be a good housewife and mother, she hid away her sword, along with everything from her days as a fighter in a faraway country. But with her growing son asking questions about the outside world, the threat of an impending invasion looming across the sea, and her frigid husband grating on her nerves, Misaki finds the fighter in her clawing its way back to the surface. Sword of Keigen is one book I was tempted to start reading again as soon as I have finished it. It has so much power and so many life lessons for us all and I urge all book lovers to read it
There are so many books I could just read all day every day but I will stop here.
Maybe I will start writing daily or weekly book recommandations? What do you think? Shall I start a little section here for my book nerd friends?
